1. Feature overview
WeChat Reading sync writes your reading data to a Notion database — each book gets its own Notion page containing:
- Book title, author, cover
- Highlights (with chapter location)
- Notes and annotations
- Reading progress
Sync uses incremental mode — only new or updated content is written. No duplicates.
2. Prerequisites
- ETN account registered (via Mini Program or extension)
- Notion authorization completed (see Connect to Notion)
- Target database configured
3. Authorize Notion
Tap "WeChat Reading" on the mini program home screen, or navigate from the bottom bar.
The left card shows your Notion connection status. If not authorized, tap "Authorize" — the process is the same as the Connect to Notion guide.
After authorization, the left card shows "✓ Authorized".
4. Connect WeChat Reading
The right card shows the WeChat Reading connection status.
Connection steps
- Tap "Scan QR code" — a QR code overlay appears
- Long-press the QR code → "Save to album"
- Close the overlay, open WeChat Scan → tap the album icon in the top right → select the saved QR code
- Complete the WeChat Reading login authorization
- Return to the mini program — the right card shows "✓ Connected"
The QR code is valid for about 1 minute. If it expires, tap "Scan QR code" again to get a new one.
WeChat Reading sessions expire relatively quickly. If sync fails, re-scanning the QR code to reconnect will fix it.
5. Start syncing
Once both Notion and WeChat Reading are connected, tap "Start sync".
The page shows real-time progress:
| Info | Description |
|---|---|
| Progress | Current book/step being synced |
| Success | Books synced successfully (green) |
| Failed | Books that failed to sync (red) |
Sync time depends on the number of books and the volume of highlights and notes. The first sync may take several minutes.
6. Scheduled auto-sync
No need to sync manually every time. ETN supports automatic daily sync.
Setup
- Find the "Scheduled sync" row on the WeChat Reading page
- Tap the time (e.g. "Daily 08:00")
- Select your preferred auto-sync time from the time picker
- Done
After setup, ETN syncs automatically in the background at that time each day — no need to open the mini program.
7. Sync results & error handling
Successful sync
After sync completes, the progress area shows a summary: number of books succeeded / failed.
Handle failed books
If any books failed, a detail list appears below with each entry showing:
- Book title
- Failure reason (e.g. Notion API timeout, data format error)
- Retry button: Tap to re-sync that book individually
8. FAQ
Q: Sync failed with "WeChat Reading session expired"?
A: WeChat Reading sessions expire frequently. Re-scan the QR code to reconnect, then try syncing again.
Q: No new content appeared in Notion after sync?
A: Confirm you have actual highlights or notes in WeChat Reading. Books you've only read without highlighting won't be synced.
Q: Will sync overwrite content I manually added in Notion?
A: No. Sync uses incremental mode — it only appends new content and never modifies your manually edited sections.
Q: Scheduled sync didn't run?
A: Scheduled sync relies on background task scheduling. If your WeChat Reading session has expired, the scheduled sync silently fails. Check your connection status regularly.
Q: Can I sync only specific books?
A: Selective sync is not currently supported. Each sync processes all books that have highlights or notes. Books already synced only receive newly added content.
